We were hiking along country lanes when I called my friend’s attention to the beauty of the velvety mulleins as they stood like sentinels along the fence lines.

Lilacs are hardy plants; with only a little care, they thrive in any garden, providing it is not in a year-round warm climate. This is the time to select lilacs so they will be delivered in time for fall planting.

It is not until a freakish year comes, that I really appreciate the reliability of wildlings in my garden. This summer was notable for frosts, which came often and unexpectedly, sometimes very suddenly, on the heels of very warm days. The results were very bad on all too many of the tame plants in my garden, and very disappointing.

Next to the dandelion which grows in every part of the country, probably the common kinds of violets are the first flowers with which the average country-born child becomes acquainted. Their earliness of bloom, their rich color and their ability to provide a game of “snapping-off-the-heads-of-roosters” make them ideal flowers for the child. Alack and alas, for many persons this may be the last contact with violets that they will have; but the wise gardener will find many a place for one or another form of what Parkinson, more than 300 years ago, described as “the chief e spring flowers for beauty, smell and use.”

Flower beds and borders are measured in feet and are limited only by the space available and the interest, time, and strength of the persons responsible for them. An indoor garden can be fully as interesting but must be reduced in size. Children and grownups alike can have fun planning and planting miniature indoor gardens.

In addition to the extent to which it always existed in our country it has multiplied with the current economic conditions. A combination of a depression and future inflation have continued to encourage it and in recent years the growth of tendencies to violence have further emboldened criminality of all kinds.

Young or newly transplanted vines are more likely to survive their first winter in a cold climate if they receive some special protection. Questionably hardy vines, or those planted in exposed areas, may need protection every year of their life. In any case, a vigorous, well-grown plant has the greatest chance to resist winter damage.

Like any other garden plants, landscape flowers, bulbs, seasonal color and vines respond beautifully to good growing conditions and reasonable amounts of care. But because of their wide variety and widely varying environmental preferences, it would be misleading to set down concrete cultural rules. Culcure varies not only from areas and temperature conditions but even within micro-climates.

Lighting for indoor houseplant, what does that mean? In a nutshell, it means that good light – and enough of it – is an important consideration in your plans for lasting effects with indoor plants. If you want to use vines for example on inside walls, away from windows, choose foliage varieties that will tolerate semishade. Or use the vines for temporary rather than permanent or lasting effect.

Ideal plants for those value fragrance rather than color, are the scented-leaved geraniums.
