Simple Steps On Building A Deck Or Patio Awning
On a hot summer day, sitting on a patio or a deck can get really uncomfortable as you’re sweating away and getting burnt by the sun. It’s nice to relax in the sun at times, but having the option of sitting in the shade is a nice luxury. It can cost a couple thousand dollars to purchase an awning, but if this isn’t your budget, there’s still an option for you! This guide will share with you how to solve this situation by building your own patio awning!
Let’s make sure you have all the proper tools and materials to successfully build your new awning. You’ll need an electric drill, a tape measure, 4 grommets, 4 sections of rope, 4 stakes, 2 key rings, 2 support poles, 2 screw hooks a large needle and a sewing machine and of course the canvas to cover the patio. Make sure the canvas is large.
The first step will be to determine the size of the canvas you need for your awning. Always purchase more than you think you need this way you have extra material for a hem. Now your sewing skills will come into play! You’ll now need to sew the hems around the material; this will help avoid any fraying. Since this canvas will be outdoors, use nylon thread since it’s more durable in the outdoor conditions. On the four corners, install one grommet on each corner.
At this point you’ll need the tape measure to measure one side of the awning. Measure from grommet to grommet. On the wood siding of the house, drill two pilot holes. This is where the awning will eventually branch out from. Do not skip this step and try to just screw the hooks in as it will be much harder. Once you’ve drilled the holes, take the hooks and screw them into the pilot holes.
Take a single key ring and install each key ring on each grommet. Start on the side that’s going up against the house first. You’ll need to place the first two key rings on the two hooks and at this point, one entire side of your awning should be complete!
In order to support the other side of the awning, we’ll need to set up the support poles. Pull the canvas to determine where the poles will stand. Make sure it’s nice and taught. The poles will either need a stand on a flat base or they can be driven into the dirt ground. Once you’ve found a secure spot for the poles, proceed by placing them through the grommets.
The rope will secure this set up. Take the rope and tie on to the grommets. You’ll want to have two sections for the rope, which will create the most support. Take one rope and direct it straight from the pole and the other on a ninety degree angle. Continue to do this for both ropes and stake them into the ground.
This process should only take a few hours. Once complete, you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy some shade on those hot summer days. This is extremely cost-efficient and a pretty simple project! Good luck!
