Types Of Ice Cream Sundaes
A favorite ice cream dessert among many Americans is the sundae. It usually consists of one or two scoops of ice cream topped with a sauce or syrup and other toppings like whipped cream, nuts and cherries. There are a number of US localities which have claimed to be the birthplace of the ice cream sundae including: Evanston & Plainfield, Illinois; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; Ithaca, New York & Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
When it comes to the invention of the ’sundae’ name one theme refers to the sinfulness of the ice cream soda and the need to produce a substitute for the popular treat for consumption on Sunday. In The First Food Empire (2000) Peter Bird writes that the name ’sundae’ was adopted from Illinois state’s early prohibition of ice cream consumption on Sundays since ice cream with a topping obscuring the main product wasn’t deemed to be ice cream.
There are many different types of ice cream sundaes now. In the original sundae you’ll find vanilla ice cream topped with a flavored syrup, whipped cream and maraschino cherry. This type of sundae is typically named for the flavor of syrup: cherry sundae, strawberry sundae, chocolate sundae, etc. Soft serve ice cream is often used for the classic sundae instead of regular ice cream.
A hot fudge sundae, which is pretty self explanatory, is a variation of the classic but using hot chocolate sauce. It can be made with any flavor of ice cream but still has the whipped cream, nuts and single bright-red cherry on top. There is also the caramel sundae which is the same but using hot caramel sauce instead of fudge. Occasionally peanut butter or other products are used to do the same. A turtle sundae is a popular combination of vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel sauces and toasted pecans. The black and white sundae is quite similar, but it features a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and a scoop of chocolate ice cream with marshmallow topping. Another variation is the brownie sundae which is made with brownies and the same toppings from a chocolate or hot fudge sundae. A “Blondie” is one that replaces the brownie often with caramel instead of chocolate.
We can’t forget the famous banana split. What makes a banana split unique is the fact that it is three sundaes in one! They are placed side by side between two halves of a banana which is sliced lengthwise. A banana split includes strawberry ice cream topped with strawberry syrup, chocolate ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream, topped with crushed pineapple. Each scoop is individually garnished with whipped cream and a cherry. Have you ever heard of a bananas foster? This sundae features a flamb of bananas with banana liquor, rum and spices.
