Rock, Roll, And Cool T-Shirts
I have been deeply involved in the rock and roll community for about two decades now. It’s always been a giant part of my life and it has given me so much fulfillment that I have been able to build a career around reviewing the music that I love so much. All of this time that I have spent watching live shows has given me a huge insight into the fashions and trends amongst the youth, and the biggest trend going now are cool t-shirts.
One of the major taboos of going to a rock show is wearing a band shirt of the band you’re going to see. Nothing shouts “lame” like being a complete fan boy. It’s a contradictory statement, because almost everyone there is a fan of the band. You want to be cooler than the typical fan boy, but you can’t show up naked. That’s where the cool t-shirts come into play.
An unspoken competition has erupted amongst scene kids to have the coolest of the cool t-shirts. When I go to shows these days, I can see how the young people are sizing each other up and judging themselves based on what the other people are wearing. In my humble opinion, it really goes against all of the things that rock and roll stand for. How can you be rebellious and be your own person if you’re constantly trying to conform?
This behavior isn’t anything insanely new, by any means. When I was as young as these kids today, I was a social chameleon. I wanted to fit in so badly that I would change my style completely depending on what kind of show I was seeing. I could shift from punk rocker to mellow hippy in no time flat. I’m sure I would have succumbed to these cool t-shirts too if they had been popular.
I grew up and matured, of course. I learned that it’s the depth of your character that is important, and not the clothes you wear. I wonder if these kids will grow up to realize that the cool t-shirts they cultivated so fervently don’t mean quite as much as they thought. I also wonder if they will judge the generation that comes after them as severely as I’ve judged them. I surely hope not.
