Boston Terrier Health And Other Concerns
On the downside, if you are not keen on a drooling, neurotic, snoring, snorting, wheezing farting dog, a Boston might not be ideal. But all breeds of dog have their good and down sides, and so do Boston Terriers. They have been credited with being slow to house break, as well as having a tendency to certain health problems. Terriers are fantastic dogs if you are looking for a sturdy animal which is small but not a lap dog, and the Boston Terrier is ideal. They are not delicate, good natured, short faced dogs, with round expressive eyes, an easy to take care of, short coat and they are passionate about playing games with balls, people and even other pets.
If you were to be considering a Boston Terrier as a choice of dog for yourself or family, your major concerns should be their unstable temperament. It is unfortunate that no matter how many puppy mills are closed down, another one will always spring up somewhere and you have to be carefully your Boston Terrier does not come from one of these. In fact you have to be careful that no dog you buy comes from a puppy mill, because supporting them simply perpetuates the problem
Boston terriers may also be put up for sale by people who have no idea how to breed them. In other word they have no knowledge of how to breed a dog with a good temper. Although a Boston Terriers is generally regarded to be a slightly neurotic dog and this is part of their charm. They do require training, love and lots of attention, but I believe that all dogs need this. They don’t like to do what they are told, so may resist house-breaking and it could take you as much as 4or even 6 months to train them, which I believe is not too abnormal for any dog.
Like all short nosed breeds the Boston Terrier is relatively noisy, they snore, snort, snuffle, grunt and wheeze, something which I find charming, but not everyone does. If they have very loose jowls, they will slobber water when they drink, and may even drool after eating or drinking.
As any dog owner knows, dogs, just like people are prone to flatulence, some more than others, just like people. The Boston Terrier can send you screaming for cover, but if they are fed on a diet of proper meat and other good fresh food, this helps with the problem. It is all about the correct diet.
Again, because of the short nose, other health problems may arise. Bostons are also often over-bred and if you are not aware of their background, they may have health issues. All you really need to do is be aware of what can arise.
All breeds of dog, event the Heinz 57 variety have their own personalities. Bostons are just as unique as any other dog. They come as serious as Winston Churchill or as flighty as Tinkerbell, but love them and they will love you.
