Vetiver Guerlain: A Fragrance Commentary

Guerlain introduced Vetiver Guerlain into the marketplace in 2000. The nose who constructed this cologne for the popular designer house was Jean Paul Guerlain.

Vetiver Guerlain Cologne is available in the eau de toilette concentration. Fragrances generally come in one of four types of concentrations: eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and parfum. Eau de cologne is made up of about 2% to 5% perfume oil; eau de toilette, about 4% to 15% perfume oil; eau de parfum, about 10% to 20% perfume oil; and parfum, about 15% to 25% perfume oil. Therefore, the percentage of perfume oil in Vetiver Guerlain for Men is between 4% and 15%.

In 1983, Michael Edwards created a system for classifying perfumes called the Fragrance Wheel. According to this classification system, there are fourteen different Families. Vetiver Guerlain Men is part of the Woods Family. Dominant aromatic notes and vetiver are characteristic of perfumes classified as Woods.

Each Family defined in the Fragrance Wheel is divided into four more subcategories called Fresh, Crisp, Classical, and Rich. These divisions correspond to different intensities of the dominant fragrance notes associated with each Family. Think of these intensities like the differences between Soprano (Fresh), Alto (Crisp), Tenor (Classical), and Bass (Rich). Vetiver Guerlain by Guerlain is in the Classical subdivision of the Woods Family.

The life of every fragrance progresses through three stages. They are referred to as Top Notes, Middle Notes, and Base Notes. These stages are a result of the varying levels of volatility of the Fragrance Notes that make up a fragrance. In other words, some fragrance ingredients in Vetiver Guerlain will evaporate faster than others, therefore producing different impressions at certain stages of its life on the skin.

Top Notes are light, volatile and evaporate quickly. They are a fragrance’s initial impression and last around 10 to 20 minutes. The Top Notes for Vetiver Guerlain Cologne are Mandarin Orange, Neroli, Bergamot, Tobacco, Lemon, Nutmeg, and Coriander.

The Middle Notes for Vetiver Guerlain Men are Sage, Vetiver, Orris Root, Pepper, Carnation and Sandalwood. These fragrance notes form the main body of a perfume and are long lasting.

The scent that emerges once the Middle Notes start to fade is called Base Notes. They give the fragrance its holding power by helping to slow down the stages of evaporation of the lighter notes. The Base Notes for Vetiver Guerlain by Guerlain include Myrrh, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Civet, Amber, Tonka Bean and Leather.

Here are some suggestions of other fragrances you may like that are in the Woods Family as Vetiver Guerlain: Gucci for Men, Christian Audigier for Men, Claiborne Sport by Liz Claiborne, Polo Sport Extreme by Ralph Lauren, English Leather by Dana, and Declaration Bois Bleu by Cartier.
