Xeryus Rouge: A Fragrance Commentary

The fragrance Xeryus Rouge was developed in 1995 by the perfumer Annick Menardo. Menardo made this fragrance for the company Givenchy.

Colognes are made up of alcohol, water, and fragrance oil. Each cologne has a varying level of each component. This is what determines a cologne’s strength. Givenchy Xeryus Rouge has the strength eau de toilette. The strongest is Parfum, which possesses about 15%-25% fragrance oil. The weakest is eau de cologne, which possesses about 2%-5% fragrance oil. The intermediate strengths are eau de toilette, which have 4%-15% fragrance oil, and eau de parfum, which have 10%-20% fragrance oil. Xeryus Rouge Cologne possesses about 4% and 15% of fragrance oil.

All perfumes and colognes can be classified into one of fourteen different Families according to the Fragrance Wheel. The Fragrance Wheel is a classification system, which was created by Michael Edwards in 1983. Xeryus Rouge Givenchy is a member of the Woody Oriental Family. What separates this Family from the others is its more distinctive use of sandalwood and patchouli.

Woody Oriental Family is further subdivided into four separate categories. These categories are Fresh, Crisp, Classical, and Rich. These categories are all distinctly Woody Oriental, however the fragrance notes get richer and deeper as you go from Fresh to Crisp to Classical to Rich. Xeryus Rouge by Givenchy belongs to the Crisp subdivision.

There are three segments that make up a fragrance’s life, which are labeled Top Notes, Middle Notes, and Base Notes. These segments occur because each Fragrance Notes that composes a cologne or perfume has differing rates of volatility or evaporation. Therefore, Xeryus Rouge goes through three distinct stages.

Top Notes are the initial impact a perfume gives when applied to the skin, and lasts about 10 to 20 minutes. The Top Notes for Givenchy Xeryus Rouge are Orange, Tarragon, and Cactus.

Middle Notes are the most dominant, and usually last for the majority of the perfume’s life. The Middle Notes for Xeryus Rouge Givenchy are African Geranium, Pimento, and Cedar.

The Base Notes for Xeryus Rouge by Givenchy include Cedar, Sandalwood, and Musk. They are the longest lasting qualities of a fragrance and help to slow down the evaporation of the lighter notes.

Here are some suggestions of other fragrances you may like that are in the Woody Oriental Family as Xeryus Rouge: Armani Code Black by Giorgio Armani, Black by Pierre Cardin, Royal Copenhagen for Men, Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men, and Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men.
