What A Funeral Director Does

The main task of a funeral director is taking charge of everything in a funeral, from the pre-burial or pre-cremation rites to the actual handling of the deceased’s body.

The funeral director has four main tasks, namely: (a) transforming the body to the mortuary; (b) embalming and preparing the body for the funeral ceremony; (c) preparing the services so people can pay their last respects to the departed, and; (d) the final act of cremation or burial, depending on the beliefs of the family.

The responsibilities of a funeral director range from publishing obituaries in the print and electronic media to arranging for a hearse to shift the deceased, besides other essential tasks like deciding the timings and venue for holding the funeral service etc. Moreover, funeral directors also take care of things like flowers and bouquet arrangements for each service, anointing and dressing the deceased, arrangement for transportation of the family and relatives from one service to another etc.

A funeral director has many responsibilities other than the ones mentioned above, including doing the essential paperwork formalities as needed. He helps the relatives in procuring a death certificate. He also makes arrangements to settle any insurance claims, and helps the family members in applying for seniors’ burial benefits. He also aids in clearing pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased to the dependants of the deceased and assists the family in assessing the costs of the entire funeral service.

He also has to coordinate with a number of professionals to accomplish his tasks in an efficient and systematic way. He has to interact with doctors, priests, casket makers and florists, all with equal ease.

Finally, it is essential for funeral directors to work beyond their normal schedule and provide comfort and relief to the suffering family of the deceased, in order to help them tide over their grief. Though some funeral directors neglect this responsibility, it is a crucial aspect in a job like this.
