Practice Gun Safety Religiously On Your Hunting Expeditions

When it comes to hunting game in America, there are a lot of options available. In the Southern states, deer hunting remains to be one of the most popular types of game for hunters and for good reason. It is great to eat. Americans have been eating venison for hundreds of years and it is still a good food source. Deer are very plentiful especially in some of the Southern states and that makes it easy to hunt. There certainly has not been any danger of diminishing the deer population because they reproduce so well.

Experienced hunters realize that accidental shootings can occur easily if you don’t stay on your toes when you are in the woods. You can accidentally shoot a hunter from another hunting party or even one of your own when proper gun safety is not observed closely enough. Hunting can be very exciting, but you have to keep a cool head and make sure your target is actually game and not another hunter. You might think it would be difficult to shoot a person by mistake thinking they were a deer, but it has happened just because one of the hunters weren’t following the rules.

Always try to keep track of other hunters in your party especially if they are wearing camouflage clothing. Losing the where abouts of a buddy along with you could be dangerous when they are hard to see in the woods. The quiet sounds of another hunter’s footsteps have often been mistaken for a deer because you can’t really see whether it is game or another person. You must be especially careful when it is first getting light in the morning hours and at dusk right before darkness sets in. Using binoculars during those times can be helpful in identifying your target before you shoot.

They make orange hunting vests for a reason too. They might save your life or someone else’s. Hunting without one is simply irresponsible. You certainly don’t want to be guilty of shooting another hunter that is not wearing a vest, but neither do you want to be the one shot because you weren’t wearing your’s. Never drink alcohol before or during your hunting trip. Save the drinking for celebrating after the hunt is over. Guns and alcohol is just an irresponsible thing to do. Hunting is also not a good idea if you are having to take certain medications that can interfere with your thinking ability or impair your vision.

It is not a good idea to load your gun before you get into the woods and always stop to unload before you leave the woods. This way it can reduce the risk of an accidental shooting when you are not even hunting. Always be careful where your gun is pointed at any time whether it is loaded or not. Thinking there was no ammunition in the gun and then being careless has been the cause of many shooting accidents and fatalities.
