Sportsmen can be found ice fishing for black crappie during the winter months though the spring months are the best time to catch them as this is the season for their spawning runs. The northern pike, walleye and a relative of walleye, the sauger, are typically best sought from the beginning of May through the end of February.
Red Lake is home to many of the fishing tournaments held in Minnesota. Each year a list of tourneys is published by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Anywhere from 400-600 permits are granted each year to sponsors of these tournaments. An entry fee could be as little as $30. That is a small investment considering how prizes often can be over $10,000.
